Soapbox Derby contestants talk mental health benefits

As entries for the popular Soapbox Derby in Aylesbury open, we're hearing about the mental health benefits of taking part.

Teams have been sharing videos about how working on their go-kart creations has helped form family and workplace bonds.

Over The Top

This team of dad, son, uncle, grandad and family friend talk about how they had to learn more about communicating with each other and that their time working on their 'tank' brought them closer.

"It shows you more that if you're confident in yourself and you just focus, you can do it."

Men in Sheds

Adrian explains how good it was being involved in the derby, as well as all of the amazing work MiS does helps so many local people.

The Dark Side

A team of father, son and daughter with an amazing bond. Dad taught them every element of the build and the video shows how spending time together and really talking can have huge benefits.

"I made Anthony lead the project, but I helped [him] all the way.

"We only did it because it was something cool to do and we had no thought that we would be competitive!"

Greased Lightening

These colleagues from Transport for Buckinghamshire put their work camaraderie to the test and took part in 2019's race.

Pebble Brook School

The school, which helps those with learning difficulties, took part in 2019 and they talk about how they used team work to build their kart, as well as how it made one another feel valued.

The race will be taking place again this year on Sunday 21 June (Fathers Day), with entries opening on Sunday.
