Fundraising for Aylesbury girls physio following spinal cord operation

A little girl from Aylesbury is preparing for an operation on her spinal cord.

Darcey is 4 years old from Aylesbury, and later this year she will have an operation on her spinal cord.

After her parents noticed her movement being slow to develop she was diagnosed with Pentrivicular Leukomalacia, a form of brain damage.

Darcey’s symptoms are ‘spastic muscles’, falling into the Cerebral Palsy bracket and she struggles to walk without aids and her quality of life is limited.

However, she has been accepted for a surgery that could change this.

After some hard work to get Darcey into the bracket accepted for surgery, she has been approved for a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) procedure.

It will involve a 5 hour operation which corrects muscle spasticity by cutting the nerve rootlets in the spinal cord that are sending abnormal signals to the muscles

Darcey's family are thankful this is available for the NHS however it is the aftercare they are concerned about, as her mum Nikola explained:

"Despite it being a 5 hour spinal operation that's the easy bit. The after bit.. Its the intense rehab for her. Darcey or any child following the particular surgery needs intense physio daily.

"It's gonna be probably £200/300 we are looking to spend a week above the NHS funding."

The family are hoping to cover the cost of this through the fundraising as the expectation is Darcey will have to go through this intense physio therapy for 18-24 months.

Their Crowdfunding page is almost half way to its £10,000 target, but the family have fundraising events planned with the hope they can reach it before Darceys goes into the surgery.
