What does £170m for infrastructure mean for Aylesbury?

Aylesbury has been given £170 million in funding, but what does this mean?

As part of the governments budget on Wednesday a funding of £170 million was awarded to Aylesbury to go towards infrastructure.

Following recent calls for investment in infrastructure Aylesbury MP, Rob Butler, welcomed the news.

Now, local authorities have shared their reaction and what this will mean.

Martin Tett leader of Buckinghamshire County Council, and part of the shadow executive for the new unitary council told mix96:

"We really do need to see the infrastructure going in ahead of new housing. We have punching for the residents of Aylesbury really, and saying if we are gonna take more housing we really need the infrastructure in place.

"We put in originally for over 200 million and we were arm wrestled down to around 80 million and have eventually been granted around 170. It isnt what we put in for, but we are grateful for whatever we can get from central government."

Martin says that they are aware how important new schools and roads are as more housing is built in and around Aylesbury.

This money will go towards things like new roads and services needed as more people move to the area.

AVDC has also been informed today that a complementary MVF (Marginal Viability Fund) application has been successful in securing a further £2.1 million in financial support for infrastructure for Aylesbury housing schemes.

Welcoming both announcements Councillor Angela Macpherson, Leader of AVDC, said:

“Housing growth without adequate investment in infrastructure has been a huge frustration for many residents of the Vale.

“This represents recognition by the Government of the role Aylesbury Vale and Aylesbury in particular is playing in accommodating the housing growth of the County and the financial support will be enormously valuable in addressing some of our residents’ key concerns.

“This provides additional certainty on the ability of the new Buckinghamshire Council to deliver key infrastructure around Aylesbury.”
