Bucks GP podcasts to get coronavirus message across

Published by Dan Gooding at 5:46am 25th March 2020.

A GP in Buckinghamshire is urging us to think before calling up surgeries under added pressure at the moment.

Amy Kerstein has produced a podcast talking us through what practices are doing at the moment.

She told us they need to get information out to those who can't get online:

"The support groups are talking on Facebook mostly and some of the most vulnerable people and those who are isolated at the moment might not be on Facebook or the internet.

"That is why we thought radio was a really important thing to get the message right into people's homes and houses and we thought a podcast could be played down the phone to people."

You can listen to the podcasts Amy has made here.

One is about changes to getting hold of contraception during the outbreak.

Our full interview with Amy is here:

One of the big questions has been about prescriptions and ongoing medication.

Amy added:

"If you need the medicine really urgently, it is absolutely fine to phone your GP surgery because you are poorly right now, whereas if you need it in your usual, routine way - we normally say about 4 days, but now it is more like 7 - try and order through the online ordering system so no-one needs to take that risky step of going to the GP surgery."

Many appointments are happening over the phone

If you are not registered for online GP services, Amy said now is the time to do it, before practices are under even more pressure.

Receptionists should be able to talk you through this.

Amy also said that if you do have any health concerns, to try and use the NHS 111 online service first before calling the surgery.

More patients are also being directed to over-the-phone 'triage' appointments first of all to stop unnecessary trips to practices.
