Children encouraged to explore Chilterns from home

Those looking after the Chilterns are helping us to keep exploring them, even if we can't get out and about at the moment.

They have created a colouring sheet of part of the area to print and enjoy at home - along with a list of things which children could research at the same time.

On their website, the Chilterns AONB said:

"Big thanks to the amazing Livi Gosling, who has been working with the CCC team for the Rock Around the Chilterns project, creating a beautiful painted map of the Chinnor to PR heritage railway route.

"We have created this special colouring sheet for you to print and enjoy at home. "

The Chilterns

They suggest that as your children colour this in, to try to identify the birds and butterflies depicted here and look up the beech woods, the old quarry in Chinnor and the Ercol factory to learn a bit more about local history.

Things to research with your children as they complete the colouring sheet:

  • Bodgers and the chair making industry in the Chilterns
  • Chalk grasslands and the flowers which thrive there
  • How many chalk streams there are in the world (and how many are here in the Chilterns)
  • Red kites and what they like to eat
  • The history of Whiteleaf cross
  • Discuss your favourite places in the Chilterns to explore or share a memory of your childhood when you spent time exploring outdoors

You can download the sheet here.
