Aylesbury man arrested after social media post

An Aylesbury man has been arrested after posting on social media about visiting Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

A 32 year old man from Aylesbury has been arrested by Thames Valley Police on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.

Officers were called yesterday following reports that a man had posted to social media saying he had visited, without medical reason, Stoke Mandeville Hospital, endangering lives and caused himself to be a public nuisance while there.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic hospitals are currently asking for people to only attend if they are in need of urgent medical care, or have a prearranged reason for visiting.

Last week Boris Johnson also set out a strict set of rules for people to follow during the outbreak.

Superintendent Mike Loebenberg said:

“We take reports such as this seriously. We will look to protect the public at all times and to support our NHS partners.

“We will continue to police by consent. We will engage, explain the circumstances and encourage people to do the right thing in complying with the government guidelines. If considered necessary, we may take enforcement action if people are not listening and putting others at risk.

“The Government has been clear that it expects people to do the right thing in order to protect the NHS and save lives.”

Neil Macdonald, CEO of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, said:

“We would like to thank our colleagues in Thames Valley Police for their continued support during what are challenging times for all of us. To keep everyone safe, please stay at home – it really will save lives.”
