Thousands raised to support Bucks' NHS staff

We are at the end of another extra-busy week for our NHS staff in Buckinghamshire.

Earlier this week, we heard how the NHS Trust looking after our hospitals here wanted to help.

Bucks Healthcare set up their own fundraiser, seeking to bring in £10,000 to:

  • support staff wellbeing and mental health
  • fund well-being packs for staff
  • enhance staff areas to provide comfortable spaces for staff to sleep or take a break during/after their shifts
  • purchase other items or activities that enhance the wellbeing of staff caring for COVID-19 patients.

Chief Executive Neil MacDonald told us staff are under a lot of pressure because of COVID-19:

"My staff are representative of the public, really.

"So they will have all the anxieties and the stressed out there and of course they are being put in some pretty scary scenarios."

Neil said they are trying to do everything they can to support staff and this fundraiser was in response to so many members of the public wanting to help.

He added that they have changed more in the last three weeks than they usually would in two years, from changes to wards to digital services:

"So not only are staff having to deal with the psychological aspects of having to do different roles and treat patients in different scenarios, they are also having to work in a very rapidly changing environment."

Packages will be put together for the 6,500 or so staff doing 'extraordinary things', as Neil put it.
