Aylesbury's homeless housed, as charity continues support

Aylesbury's homeless population are still being helped, despite the lockdown.

The charity Aylesbury Homeless Action Group have had to switch to supporting clients through WhatsApp and online services because of coronavirus.

Local authorities were told to make sure homeless people were in accommodation after the country went into lockdown.

Karen Warner, from the charity, told us:

"So we have seen a lot more people who were sofa surfing now needing accommodation.

"I am pleased to say that there have been accommodation offers for everybody either rough sleeping or sofa-surfing."

Usually a person is able to sleep at a friend's or family members for a new nights at at time before moving on, but at the moment this isn't possible.

Karen added:

"It's been a really good opportunity to try and really work with people, although challenging doing it from a distance.

"The good news is that those people are in accommodation with support from so many agencies, not just us."

AHAG, like many of us, have had to adapt to working remotely, something which is tricky when staff are so used to working face-to-face with clients.

They have been using the phone, WhatsApp and video calls to stay in touch instead.

Many have struggled with mental health during this time and Karen told us that those facing homelessness have felt this especially.

She said:

"We've been doing phone calls with people every day, just catching up with them and we have also employed a mental health worker one day a week.

"He has been supporting our clients who we are particularly concerned about."
