Plans for new dual carriageway around part of Aylesbury

The South-Eastern Link Road could help ease congestion.

Plans for new dual carriageway around part of Aylesbury

Plans for part of Aylesbury's new link road system have been revealed and it's a dual carriageway!

This is for the section between the A413 and Lower Road, linking up with the new Stoke Mandeville bypass from the A4010 planned by HS2.

At the other end, a new roundabout on Wendover Road would link this into Hampden Fields, as and when that development gets built.

The road could take up to a year to build, but permission still needs to be given, with a deadline of July for that.

Proposals also include greenery, footpaths and a bridge over the railway, which has been paid for by HS2.

An Armillary Sphere (which featured in the inaugural Heritage Flame lighting event at Stoke Mandeville ahead of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games) is
proposed to be located in the centre of the roundabout island.

A long time coming

Plans for this road have been talked about for several years now, along with the other sections around Aylesbury.

All of it is to ease congestion in the town centre, but without constructing a bypass.

It was back in March 2017 that we heard about aspirations for a link road system all around Aylesbury.

This was me explaining about the proposals back then:

This map shows the plans so far, with the only built sections as of April 2020 being Martin Dalby Way between Berryfields & Buckingham Park (opened in 2014) and Stocklake's redesign.

You can see where the South East Link Road fits in, with plans still in place for Hampden Fields, the section from the A4010 and the Eastern Link Road, which is now under construction.

There is also a pending application for a road across the bottom of Walton Court, although no decision has been made on that either.

When it comes to the norther section, between A413 and A418, we haven't heard anything since these proposals in 2016.

Nothing has been proposed for connecting the A418 Oxford Road and A41 Bicester Road yet.

However, with a big grant from the government earlier this year, we might see some movement on these plans soon.
