English teacher goes viral with online classes

Thousands are tuning in every day to see an English teacher from Leighton Buzzard's lessons.

Holly King-Mand had no idea how her live-stream would go, but she's getting thousands of hits on YouTube every class.

She started the day the schools closed, as she was due to return from maternity leave and wanted to help out.

Holly told us she had just posted in a few Facebook groups:

"When I did the first live lesson on 23rd March I had nearly 2,000 people watching live.

"It had quickly risen to 15,000 by the end of the first day.

"So it was a really quick spiralling of numbers and quite overwhelming."

Holly told us she has had great feedback from families:

"So many parents have been saying how useful the lessons were for them and how much it meant to them to have English come to life in their lounge or their kitchen, wherever they are doing the lessons."

Holly posts on most school days and has a Facebook page, too, where she shares activity sheets to help parents out.

She told us that whilst it isn't as interactive as being in a classroom and a little frustrating not being able to mark children's work, she has just had to adapt.

One of Holly's challenges for students

We have heard concerns that some children aren't getting any home-schooling.

Holly said parents are using her classes either to complement work set by schools or in addition as it includes getting children up on their feet and involved in classes.

The teacher doesn't think school can be the same once restrictions are lifted:

"I would be disappointed if things went back just to the way they were before.

"I think we have all learnt so much about how we can learn online, how we can adapt our teaching, how we can adapt our learning.

"Now there is so much more choice and people are looking at things from a different perspective, I think we can only benefit from all of this."

If you want to join in, Holly goes live over on YouTube at 11am.
