Bucks school children help brighten up hospital

Stokenchurch Primary School has remained open during the national lockdown to support the children of key workers, enabling them to continue their vital roles in the community.

As a way to say thank you, the children have produced wonderful artwork to cheer up the walls, patients and staff at Stoke Mandeville hospital.

The idea came to Charlotte Dennis, Assistant Head, having chatted to her sister who works at the hospital.

Mrs Dennis said:

"I thought it was important for the children to feel like they were supporting and have an understanding of our current situation without being frightened.

"They had produced some inspiring images; it seemed the perfect opportunity and a wonderful gesture to express our thanks to all NHS workers by sending the children's pictures to the hospital."

Rachael Jones, Year 6 teacher had been reading Charlie Mackesy's book 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse' to the children during the first days of the lockdown, inspiring the children to create their own pictures in Mackesy's style.

Miss Jones added:

"The book was a perfect way to help the children that were in school to talk about their feelings."

Nick Stevens, Headteacher added:

"We are proud to support the families of our critical workers in a small way that helps us play our part, and, like many schools, have taken the opportunity to show our appreciation for the hard work of frontline NHS staff, amongst many others, at this unprecedented time."

Trust Chief Executive Neil Macdonald said:

"Thank you to the children and staff at Stokenchurch Primary School for these wonderful creations.

"They have been put up in the main restaurant area at Stoke Mandeville Hospital so they can be seen by everyone."
