Over 600 in Aylesbury Vale raise money for hospice

Around £3,700 has been raised for Aylesbury Vale's hospice, thanks to hundreds of people earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity appealed for volunteers to donate £2 and walk a mile to mark Florence Nightingale's 200th birthday on 12th May by walking 949 miles together from the front door of Florence Nightingale Hospice to the centre of Florence in Italy, where Florence Nightingale was born.

The response from the community was impressive, with over 600 people walking, cycling or running the miles required to get to from Florence to Florence - and over halfway back again.

Kirsty Shanahan, PR & Marketing Manager for Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity, said:

"We were not sure if people would engage with this event, but the response was overwhelming, thanks particularly to coverage of the event by Mix96.

"Not only did people sign up to do one mile, many did far more than one, while others got sponsorship or donated more to the Hospice on top."

The Charity asked participants to email or message when they had completed their miles, and to send in photos and videos.

Hundreds responded, mostly Buckinghamshire residents but also from as far afield as Toronto and Massachusetts.

Kate Lee, Ward Sister of the In-Patient Unit at the Hospice, said:

"I've been overwhelmed with how many people have signed up.

"For somebody who works at the Hospice, every pound raised means that we can continue to deliver the high level of care that is required for a hospice patient. So it's a huge thank you and a huge well done."

Kirsty added:

"It was so heartwarming to get so many photos and messages.

"We have been cheered by all the wonderful photos and videos people have sent us, and by their smiling faces and the beautiful views of Buckinghamshire. We do miss our community so much at the moment but it really felt like we were all together once again, sharing something special."

The Charity says that the final tally of miles meant that the 'Flo to Flo' team were only 375 miles from the Hospice on the return journey, and the amount raised was an estimated £3,700 including additional donations via Facebook and the Charity's website.
