Bucks pubs could lead the way post lockdown

A mock up has been released by Oakman Inns.

A new layout for the Betsey Wynne in Swanbourne Buckinghamshire could be the way forward for pubs.

Part of the Oakman Inn group, who also own pubs in Aylesbury, Berkhamsted and Tring, the idea is to look at how pubs can adapt so they can reopen.

The mock-up for the Swanbourne site includes glass screens between tables, a one way system, disposable menus, an ordering app and anti bacterial throughout the venue.

Peter Borg-Neal is founder and Chief Executive of Oakman Inns and says:

"There's two key priorities. Number one to protect employees and number two to protect customers.

"We have studied all the advice from the government and we have worked really hard to comply with it.

"We have to comply and willingly comply when it comes to food hygiene, health and safety and fire safety. The risk caused by the COVID-19 is no different. You asses the risk, you do a risk analysis and you put in measures to protect everybody."

Having previously been able to seat 204 the Betsey Wynne would be reduced to 146 if their planned measures are put in place.

Peter says he, and other people in the industry, accept this may be a consequence and each venue will be different:

"We will have to go, and we have a team of people to do this, around each and every one of our pubs and work out how to do it, work out a new layout.

"Where to position the screens, how to lay the tables out and we will have to remove some of the tables regardless.

"We will figure it out, and it will really be a pub by pub plan. They're all different shapes and sizes, and the buildings are different ages."
