Kindness in Bucks celebrated by council

Buckinghamshire Council are asking people to be kind to themselves and others. 

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week 2020 Buckinghamshire Council are asking its residents to promote kindness. 

During coronavirus local people have come together to support each other. 

One example of this is Micheline, a library worker who is now volunteering at the council's Local Support hub in Marlow. 

She said although times are hard, the generosity she has seen has been humbling:

"The community is strong, the community is better.

"The fact local residents have come together to form support groups. these are people who might not have known their neighbours yet they're willing to go out and do shopping for them."

This isn't the only example of people giving their time to help the vulnerable though. 

Rushika Das is a medical student at the University of Buckingham, who despite being back in Dubai, is calling patients to check they are okay:

"I was wondering how I could contribute and this was the perfect option for me to help the community I'm a part of now as a medical student. When I make these calls the people who I've been in contact with have responded very positively."

These are just some examples of the Buckinghamshire community support others, but the council are keen to highlight looking after you. 

To help people do this they are showcasing Buckinghamshire Minds well being tips, which in summary are:

  1. Connect - stay connected with friends and family. There are lots of ways people can stay in touch while respecting the governments lockdown restrictions, these include: phone calls, texts, video calls and even writing letters.
  2. Be Active - The ActiveBucks website has lots of ideas about how to keep yourself active at this time. 
  3. Take Notice - make the most of getting out for some fresh air and exercise each day, the trees are getting their leaves etc. Really think about what you can see, hear and smell. If you are unable to get out, you could listen to some favourite music.
  4. Keep Learning - maybe you've always wanted to learn a language? Visit the Adult Learning in Bucks site for some inspiration from Assertiveness to Yoga there's something for everyone and lots can be done online.
  5. Give - give back to your community. Volunteering is a really good way to support people or organisations in and around your local (or national) area, and as some people begin to return to work, there will be a need for new volunteers to step in.

Gareth Williams, Buckinghamshire Council's Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Health adds:

"In these challenging times, we want to help prevent residents from experiencing mental health issues. There are many ways to improve how you feel and by building simple steps into your everyday life, you can help yourself avoid or balance the stresses and strains of a busy life.

"The Five Ways to Wellbeing plan is an easy and achievable way to start looking after your own mental health, so why not give it a try?

"Don't forget that all of our mental health support partners are still working and there to help you if you need it including the NHS Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire 24/7 Mental Health Helpline. For help for adults call 01865 904 997 and for children and young people, call 01865 904 998."
