103-year-old raises over £7k for Alzheimer's Society

A 103-year-old woman in Stone is finishing her 103 laps of her care home today.

She has raised seven times her fundraising target for Alzheimer's research.

Hilda Duncombe started her challenge back at the start of May, inspired by Captain Tom and wanting to raise a grand for the Alzheimer's Society.

At the time, she told Ben & Nia on The Breakfast Show:

"I'm trying to put in an umber of walks in aid of the Alzheimer's [Society]

"We're fortunate in that we have got lovely grounds and easy-to-walk paths, so it's very simple."

Hilda has managed to raise over £7,000 as she takes the final steps of the challenge today at Bartlett's Care Home.

The idea was to talk three laps a day.

The physical challenge she has set herself was remarkable, not least because of her age, but also because she only has 1 hip!

She had a major operation 13 years ago which left her disabled and only able to walk with the aid of a frame.

Hilda is the matriarch of the Duncombe family; mother of 3, grandmother of 9 and great grandmother of 11 at the last count.

Due to the Corona virus and the restrictions of social distancing, they have been unable to cheer her on in person but they have been “with her” every step of the way.
