Stoke Mandeville Hospital has been supported by volunteers thanks to a new scheme.

Following the coronavirus pandemic Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury has seen support form St. johns Ambulance volunteers.

A new partnership has seen the national health and first aid charity provide two volunteers per shift, seven days a week, to SMH to support clinical teams.

Cheryl has been volunteering for the charity for over 30 years and says it's a challenge:

"It is completely different. We don't normally see what happens in the hospital. We normally just say 'you need to go to A&E' and we don't see the other side.

"So now we are kind of seeing that other side and what happens to those who come into the hospitals.

"And we are a learning new skills while at the hospital."

Since April 1, specialist COVID-19 training has been given to more than 1,600 St John volunteers.

Dr Tina Kenny, Medical Director for Buckinghamshire NHS Healthcare Trust, said:

"The work of St John Ambulance volunteers up and down the country has been enormously valuable, both to patients and our healthcare staff, and this is certainly true in Buckinghamshire.

"We are very grateful for the support and dedication of all these volunteers as we all work together to tackle the coronavirus outbreak."

People who are able top volunteer, or who following the crisis are considering joining the team are being encouraged to contact SJA.

Cheryl says the role is more flexible than people may think:

"You can never not have the right skill set. The training you are given you are trained to the level you are confident in.

"You don't have to commit to every weekend. It is down to the individual what they want to get out of it."
