A retired surgeon from Stoke Mandeville Hospital is getting on his bike to raise funds for the wellbeing of staff during the pandemic.

86-year-old, Chris Pool, will be cycling a distance of 874 miles the same distance as travelling between Land's End and John O'Groats.

Chris was an orthopaedic surgeon at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and retired 18 years ago.

He said:

"I was given the bicycle 15 years ago by a grateful widow whose husband I helped in his terminal illness.

"I started cycling when lockdown occurred and decided three weeks ago that I would do something for Stoke Mandeville Hospital where I had been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon for 29 years."

Chris is cycling daily between Great Missenden and Chequers until he has cycled a total of 874 miles.

So far Chris has raised more than £3,700 to support BHT staff, and has cycled around 200 miles.

Trust chief executive Neil Macdonald said:

"Mr Pool's commitment to support us all even after 29 years of service, is both humbling and inspiring.

"We are so grateful for his fantastic efforts and continued support and for the generous donations as a result."
