Bucks council supports new internet lines

Bucks Council are planning to vote on plans to build new lines.

As East West Railway undergo construction work Buckinghamshire Council are hoping to use the time to their advantage.

They want to put fibre optic cables in place during the works, which they say would say money in the future.

There are four options being put forward:

  • Option 1: Fibre cable only
  • Option 1+: Fibre cable plus 'handover points'
  • Option 2: Fibre cable plus enhanced mobile antenna masts
  • Option 3: Do nothing

The preferred option is Option 1+, which the council say is the most cost effective way of securing digital infrastructure along the rail corridor.

This is estimated to cost around £1.14m of Work In Kind Funding, with a local Buckinghamshire contribution of £456,000.

Buckinghamshire Council argue this figure would be much higher if nothing is done and the lines are retrofitted.

In order to keep up with the advancing technology these lines will need to be fitted and costs of construction can be mitigated if done with the rail works.

Buckinghamshire Council has published a report ahead of a vote next week on the issue.
