Aylesbury based audiobook charity launches appeal

The national audiobook charity is based in Aylesbury.

Calibre Audio produce audiobooks for those who struggle to read print but they need support to continue.

There are a range of reasons someone find its difficult to read from a book/screen.

Nila James from the group explains:

"Most of our members have visual impairments, lots of them are elderly. But we also support children and adults with dyslexia, people who have just left hospital some have physical conditions that make turning a page hard.

"I think it is something we take for granted. Freedom to read is a right yet there is a large percentage of the population who cannot afford to buy their own audiobooks."

Some of the works Calibre produces do not have audiobooks at all, others do but they are for a price.

In order to make the world of books more accessible the charity provide the audiobooks free of charge.

The have around 14,500 members across the country accessing their resources, and that has grown by around 100 each week in lockdown.

The charity urgently need to fundraise to keep up with demand, as Nila explains:

"Like the whole charity sector we have been massively impacted by COVID-19. A lot of grant and trust fund money has been diverted which we usually receive and legacy money which has slowed down. So, we are way down on income.

"Because we run a free service we have seen a rise during lockdown. We usually have around 100 volunteers to come in and help but they are often elderly so have been sheltering.

"Our members are just so grateful to get that audiobook, we really need to reach our target.

"I am no exaggerating we have had hundreds of letters saying we have been a lifeline to them. It really gives them escape and takes you into another world."
