Aylesbury teen hopes to break sailing record

A 15 year old from Aylesbury is setting sail around Britain today.

Timothy Long, from Watermead in Aylesbury Vale, is setting sail today to try and become the youngest person to sail solo around Britain.

The 15 year old has been sailing since he was 9 years old, and has been planning this trip for 2 years now.

Sailing alone is a difficult and dangerous thing, with weather playing an important role.

Timothy will be sailing without a support boat but says he believes he can do it:

"You have to feel confident because if you don't feel confident then you just wont act as well. You have to have self belief you will do it.

"Obviously when you are on your won you have to take safety into account to the maximum level. If you go over the side, or something happens, there is just you. Nobody knows where you are of what is going on. So, you need to know how to fix or look after anything that happens."

At 13 Timothy decided he wanted to take this trip, and has been training and planning every since.

His mother Sue told Mix96 it is a scary time:

"Of course its a very scary prospect have your boy go round Britain on a boat on his own. However, I do feel over the last couple of years he has developed his sailing skills and has also been focused a lot on navigation.

"He is a very sensible boy, and he has said he has safety paramount so I have to think about it as not a 6-10 week trip around Britain but a series of short trips.

"I just feel so proud of him because he has just developed into such a competent sailor."

As well as trying to break a record, Timothy has also decided to raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

They support 8-24 year olds who have been through cancer treatment, and use sailing and adventure to rebuild peoples confidence.

Timothy told Mix96 why he decided to try and raise money at the same time:

"It was found by Ellen MacArthur who has really inspired me to do this, and this is the 25 anniversary of her doing around Britain.

"They're helping people in a really unique way, they giving people to chance to go out, challenge themselves, speak to other people who have been though cancer treatments and really help rebuild their confidence.

"It helps to rebuild peoples lives after they have been through cancer treatment. What is really unique about it, and something I connect with, is they're all my age so there's a real connection there."
