LISTEN: 'It's Exasperating, Being On Your Own', Says Age UK Bucks User

We hear more and more about an aging population and here in Buckinghamshire, Age UK are trying to help people cope with that.

They are, of course, our Charity of the Year.

So we wanted to go a bit deeper and meet some of the people Age UK Bucks help.

They run a whole host of services, but money is always an issue and they desperately need more support.

Have a listen to Dan's report and find out more about Pat & Basil below:

Pat & Louise

News Extra - Age UK - Pat & Louise

  • She's 79.
  • She's had a whole load of jobs in the past, from working in a woollen mill to running a care home.
  • For the last two years, Pat's lived in Aylesbury, in an annex at her daughter's house.
  • But because her daughter works most of the time, Pat doesn't always have someone about.
  • Her artheritis has also got worse since then.
  • She started with Age UK Bucks' phone version of the befriending scheme, before meeting Louise
  • Louise's husband Matt also volunteers with a man called Ivor (you might have heard him on our Charity of the Year adverts!)
  • Pat & Louise share a love of celebrity gossip and bonded over Strictly Come Dancing.
  • Louise told us she just ends up eating lots of Pat's biscuits!
  • Both would highly recommend being involved in the befriending scheme

News Extra - Age UK - Basil

  • He's 77
  • He's lived in the house he built for over 40 years in Aylesbury
  • Basil's had 8 hip operations, including three times where he's been left without hips.
  • Last time, he spent 15 weeks in bed.
  • One of his best friend's oversees Age UK Bucks and helped him out a bit
  • That lead to him using the toe-nail cutting service

All of these services cost money. Whether that's a chargeable thing, like the toenail cutting, or the voluntary befriending scheme.

Age UK Bucks, like so many charities, are struggling for money to keep all this going.
